Online Magnet Application

The Expressive Arts Magnet Program at Rainbow Park Elementary School
is designed for students who demonstrate a high interest in learning
and show potential for growth in a comprehensive program that includes
dance and music.

The Performing Arts Magnet Dance Teacher and Magnet Lead Teacher is Kathy Pilafian. She received her degree from the University of Miami with a
specialty in Dance Studios - 1985. Ms. Pilafian has over twenty five
years of professional and teaching experience in dance. She has
performed with various dance companies and also sang, choreographed
and performed dances for the "UM Singers" at the University of Miami
while on tour in South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. She also sang and
choreographed for the Florida International University (Tamiami
Campus) Singers as well. Ms. Pilafian has performed in musical theatre
productions and is the founder of her calesthenics class "Dance 'n' Slim".



 

 

 


The Expressive Arts magnet teacher for music is Jessica McCloud.  She received her degree in music from Barry University (bachelors) and her masters degree from Nova Southeastern University.  Mrs. McCloud has over 13 years experience of professional and teaching in music.  She performed on broadway and off broadway in New York.  She also sung professionally for several celebrities in music.  She has taught all over South Florida.  Her favorite genre is musical theatre.

Participation

Engaged Learning for Dance:
All students will be engaged in learning and performing different styles of dance which includes ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance. Creative dance and choreography are part of the magnet dance curriculum as well. Those students who have demonstrated an ability to perform at a highly technical level in dance will be given opportunities to practice and perform individually and/or in small groups.

Engaged Learning for Music:

All students will be engaged in learning and performing vocal techniques, strings, drums, and recorders. Those students who have demonstrated an ability to perform on other instruments such as woodwinds, brass, keyboard, percussion, etc. will be given opportunities to practice and perform individually and/or in small ensembles.


Eligibility Requirements:

Any student who is currently in the second, third, or fourth grade and who is interested in the magnet dance or the magnet music curriculum may apply. In addition, the following is required:

A minimum of 2.0 grade point average in core academic classes (e.g. Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies)

A minimum grade of "C" in conduct

All effort grades in core acedemic classes must be a "2" or higher.


Also, placement is based on audition results. Parents/Guardians are to contact Rainbow Park Elementary to schedule an audition as soon as possible. Please call our school at 305-688-4631 and ask for the magnet dance/lead teacher, Kathy Pilafian, or the magnet music teacher, Jessica McCloud to schedule an audition.

Auditions are held on specific Wednesdays after school at Rainbow Park Elementary at 2:30 pm. Parents/Guardians and their children are to sign in at the Main Office upon arrival.

The only thing students need to bring with them is a copy of their latest report card grades. They do not need to bring anything else or have anything prepared. Students auditioning for the magnet dance program will be expected to take off their shoes and socks before the dance audition begins.
